The Ageing Population in the UK

The Government predicts that Britain is likely to see an increase in the ageing population of elderly people over the next 20 to 30 years, during this time the number of people over 60 years of age is estimated to rise by up to 40%.

The older generation is now much more switched on to the resources available to them, along with health tips and guidance on how to keep fit and and live longer. Older people in their sixties, seventies and even eighties are still leading fit and active life styles.

As most people are living longer than ever before, then the need for more care homes and related services will be needed to provide support for the ageing population.
Years ago family members were more likely to care for their elderly relatives, but today with economic pressures and famly breakdowns this is less likely to happen.

Because the ageing population is increasing, and people are living longer, then people suffering from diseases such as dementia, heart disease, cancer, depression and other conditions will need more care (possibly over 24 hours) either in residential care, or with the support of care services at home.

More services and resources like care in the community will be needed to accomodate the needs of people who live longer. See our related article on this website for Home care and care in the community
